Cinnamon may be more than just a tasty spice
Barbara Merchant
Cinnamon, a spice found in most households, may have a use in preventing and treating diabetes.
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara are studying its effects in diabetic mice after researchers in Pakistan, working with a scientist from the US Department of Agriculture, found promising results in diabetic human subjects in Pakistan.
The Pakistani study participants who consumed 1, 3 or 6g cinnamon daily had a significant drop in serum glucose, LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), triglycerides and total cholesterol but no improvement in HDL (good) cholesterol. The scientists believe cinnamon has a bioactive component that may enable it to serve as an insulin substitute in type 2 diabetes.
The research opens the door for exploring cinnamon's uses in helping other major diseases, such as pancreatic cancer, that involve insulin resistance
