"My List"
by Stacy Shanahan
As previously published in CarbHealth Magazine.
On my refrigerator I keep a list of the reasons that I low carb. I have another copy in my purse so it is always with me. Some days this list is my saving grace. Although this is certainly the easiest diet/lifestyle I have ever followed, some days, to be honest, low carbing is difficult. My list goes something like this:
I low carb because….
- It makes me feel better
- It gives me more energy
- My clothes fit better & look better on me
- I love to hear people say “You’ve lost weight” and “You are looking great.”<br>- I love to see the numbers on the scale go down
On a number of occasions, when everyone is snacking from the bread basket or ordering the pasta or having dessert, I have needed to pull out my list. Reading over my list gets me to rethink my food choices. Some of my friends think I am crazy and that I shouldn’t “deprive” myself. Then again most of these people have never seen me on a “sugar binge” (before I was a low carber) devouring half a cheesecake. “My List” isn’t foolproof. There have been times I have read it over and then thrown caution to the wind and ordered something I really shouldn’t be having. But I can accept that I made the decision to cheat and it wasn’t just on a whim. As long as I get right back on track, the extra carbs I ate will burn themselves off relatively quickly.
Come to think of it, maybe I need to make one of these lists to motivate myself to go to the gym!!
